Japanese SaaS ISV upgrades to MySQL Enterprise Edition to provide advanced security for a major financial institution within three months.
Introduction & Background
DreamArts is a Tokyo and Hiroshima-based SaaS ISV that specializes in helping large enterprises accelerate business operations through digitization. Its core products include SmartDB, a no-code development platform with workflow and web database functions; Shoprun, a cloud service that supports multi-store businesses; and InsuiteX, a business cockpit designed to change the way large enterprises work.
DreamArts advocates for digital democratization, partnering closely with its clients to plan, design, and create customized products that drive digital transformations and enhance decision making. The company’s mission is to contribute to the growth of people, organizations, and society, embracing the joy of co-creation.
Business Challenges & Goals
The short supply of digital talent on the labor market, coupled with the imperative for enterprises to modernize through digitization, has increased demand for DreamArts’ SmartDB SaaS, which enables non-technical employees to create business applications without the need for programming.
However, the recent rise in data security breaches and threats among large enterprises has created a need for enhanced security within the SmartDB product.
One of DreamArts’ key clients, a major financial institution, requested a higher level of data protection compliant with international standards, including table encryption and advanced key management. To achieve this, a response that worked with the Key Management Service (KMS) platform had to be implemented in three months.
Business Results & Metrics
DreamArts judged that the encryption technology provided by MySQL Enterprise Edition would make advanced encryption easy, so they decided to support it. “Upgrading to MySQL Enterprise Edition was the best way to meet our client’s data security needs within a tight deadline,” commented Tsutomu Kadowaki.
DreamArts boosted the security of its SaaS offerings by leveraging MySQL Enterprise Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) to encrypt all data stored at rest in MySQL. MySQL TDE also facilitated enhanced key management by enabling the company to implement Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) alongside SmartDB’s supported Key Management Service (KMS) platform.
“Security concerns are increasing worldwide among enterprise clients, and the concept of BYOK, which separates data encryption and ownership of encryption keys, is becoming more widespread. MySQL Enterprise Edition proved to be the best way to rapidly enable this functionality for our clients, supporting fine-grained authority management and advanced security in our SmartDB product,” said Tsutomu Kadowaki.
Why MySQL Enterprise Edition?
DreamArts selected MySQL Enterprise Edition primarily for its ability to meet stringent security requirements and ease of implementation.
After evaluating various database systems, DreamArts found that the technical hurdles were too high to develop the product within the required time frame. MySQL Enterprise Edition emerged and was selected as the most feasible solution to meet the tight deadline and technical needs.
“The number of security incidents disclosed in Japan is increasing every year, making advanced security measures essential for both our company and our customers. MySQL Enterprise Edition provided the necessary functionality to achieve our goals within a short time frame, addressing industry-specific needs for enhanced security,” Tsutomu Kadowaki said.
Next Steps
DreamArts plans to conduct internal research sessions on MySQL Enterprise Edition to explore more advanced features and further improve its security and operational capabilities.
