Tags, small text phrases which describe a thing, are attached to something and used to search through content, and more importantly, to interconnect the various things in the Web 2.0 application world. For instance, a blogger's articles are tagged, and thereby connected to all sorts of other things – other blog entries, news stories, user profiles, products, etc – that have a corresponding similar tag.

Moreover, the concept of "social networking" is invading Web 2.0 applications, further stressing the importance of the underlying database schema which handles the relationships between the various users of the web application.
